It's Never Too Late to Start Something New

• MaJhane aka MamMaJ • Episode 62

Have you been thinking about starting something new but can't push go? I understand what that feels like and have found it easier when I finally take my foot off the brake. Allow me to offer 4 reasons why it's never too late to start something new! These reasons aren't so profound that you couldn't think of them yourself, but I do provide personal experiences/examples that show if I can do it, you can too!

In this week's episode, we are starting with a breathing exercise that focuses on balance. This breathing technique follows the 4-2-4 breathing model where you breathe in for four seconds, hold for two seconds and breathe out for four seconds. This breathing exercise focuses on the balance due to the breathwork pattern that causes your blood to flow away from and toward your lungs. Give it a try and see how this breathing exercise works out for you.

Afterward, I share four reasons why it's never too late to start something new. I've had moments where I wrestled with the concept of starting over, and it automatically exhausted me. What part of turning around and starting from the beginning sounds appealing? Trust me I get it. It doesn't start to truly feel worth it until you make that change and see a difference. Ultimately, you won't really know until you try it.

Hello my babies as I've mentioned this is your girl MaJhane AKA MamMaJ my pronouns are she her and hers and you are listening to MamMaJ(ism). Thank you for deciding to listen in on this talk of love and honest conversation so let's get into it. If you have been spending time lately considering if you should start something new but I'm sure if it's the right move this episode is for you. By the time you finish this episode you will know for reasons why it's never too late to start something new. There are more reasons than four but I just felt like four was a solid strong even number so that's what we're going with. And in true MamMaJ fashion each reason will be connected to a situation that has happened in my own life not only because I used the story I use storytelling on my podcast but also just to show that it's possible like if I can do it you can most definitely do it. Alright let's get into it.

4 reasons why it's never too late to start something new. Reason number one you gave it your best shot and it didn't work out. Woo I related this one on all the levels that there is to relate to something. If you don't know I graduated from San Diego State University in 2017 with my bachelor's in Recreation Tourism Management and a minor in Communications. Now, it wasn't always Recreation when I first started out at SDSU I got accepted with hospitality so hotel management and I you know sophomore year happened my grades dropped partying too much so I had to switch over to the sister major where I learned a lot but even still the goal was always hotels right. So while I was going to college full time I was also working in hotels full-time. My first two years of working in the hotel scene was amazing. I loved it I love, connecting with my co-workers, I loved meeting do people you know getting to know the guests it was it was a great experience for me. But then years 3/4 and so on it kind of started to like wear off that like new car smell type of thing you know like when you start something new and it's just like yes this is exactly how I imagined it to be and then the honeymoon phase is over and you're like this is not what I signed up for. That's pretty much how I have been feeling working in the hotel industry it's just not my cup of tea like I thought it would be. And you know and it's not really 222 anyone's fault it's not even my my bad it's just that I had miscalculated my true goal and the reason why I really wanted to work at hotels aside from free hotel stays is I want to help people. you know that's always been kind of the thing for me like I've always been I've always gravitated toward the volunteer projects or the work opportunities that allowed me to help other people and so I felt like hotels was a good a good place for me to do that because I do get those benefits but also I get to help people. But then I realize in the hotel industry there's a difference between helping people and catering to people. and let me tell you something the only people I I cater to is myself maybe, a significant other for sure and you know like family and in really close friends but I'll be damned if I'm about to cater to some strangers who treat me badly. you know what I mean like I don't even get any reward out of it like you you just make me feel bad and I'm treating you good like what's up with that so hotels with it's just not for me and you know I still work technically I still work in hotels but now that I know that this isn't the proper career path for me I am starting to make those adjustments and figure out ways to kind of make the switch to something that's more in my lane. and of course at first knowing that I went to school for this long I I felt defeated like wow I spent all this time thinking that this is it for me like I could have you no use that time in school to take a class on Broad broadcasting you know take turn my communication minor into a communication major and then you know who knows how far along I would have gone with podcasting but when you start getting into those what ifs if that's just where you lose yourself and you don't want to do that. I'm very thankful for my experience at SDSU. There were good things that came out of this even though I knowing now that like it's just not it for me that doesn't mean that it's the end of me you know.

Reason number two so starting something new can spark something inside you that you didn't even realize was there. So my example for this is when I was in high school senior year had some time that I could pick up an elective I ended up picking up a sewing class that I didn't even know was on the curriculum I had no idea that we had a sewing class at my high school but lo and behold there was so I took the sewing class with one of my best friends and we it was fun. Because of that I had decided at the beginning of 2020 to buy a sewing machine because it was a good to for my heart break but also because it was a nice little serotonin boost. When I was telling in that class it was fun and so it brings me back to those memories and then even being older now creating my own stuff and I really enjoy it so I really appreciate having to start something new in the sense of having to take that class that I didn't really know much about. I knew how to hand sew but I didn't realized how much fun it could be to like actually use a sewing machine and so even though that starting something new came from a necessity like I had to take an elective class it's still end up benefiting me in ways that I'm still seeing almost 10 years later down the line you know

Reason number three it breaks up the monotony of everyday life. So we're talking about starting something new it could seem a little daunting cuz it's like a I got to start fresh I got to like start from the beginning and if you're like me and you like to know how to do something right the first time it's not always going to be fun you know but breaking up the monotony is just like my all-time favorite thing to do you know like I can't stand schedule and I know that this this particular reason probably isn't going to hit home to a lot of people because I know a lot of people enjoy having their times planned out they like to have their day set 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. booked like they know exactly what they're doing at exactly what time and you know what more power to you I respect you so much I truly wish that I was that type of person but I’m not I can't I tried to do it and it just doesn't work out for me so instead what I've been doing to the kind of break up my man and keep things fresh in my life is to live a more intuitive life. and I can go into more depth about that in a later episode but really essentially what that looks like is I I have overarching like goals and themes that I want to accomplish each day and I don't have like a set way to go about doing this so I'll take my physical health for example I really want to get back in shape and be more active because in a couple months I'll be going back to work which has always involves a lot of physical activity so with that I Know Myself and I know that sticking to a workout regimen it's just not it's not for me it's not what I can do so instead I have I taken a more intuitive approach meaning my only expectation for myself is to do something active everyday so that could be walking around the block could be going on a hike that could be doing one of those YouTube exercise videos whatever whatever feels good that day. when I tell you what breaks up the monotony baby okay like I I never know what the day is going to bring because I never know how I'm going to feel and what works now once I actually start working again it's going to be interesting to see how I incorporate intuitive living with this concept of okay now I have a schedule where I have to go in you know on specific days but we'll work through that it's okay

All right and reason number four is it doesn't have to be a life sentence, you can always go back to what you know. So I know it for a lot of us we're afraid to start something new because we feel like well once I take this step there's no going back and that's not true at all for the most part I have to preface this because I guess it really depends on what it is that you're trying to start new I feel like I'd be remiss if I didn't say that because if we're talkin your career options like you can't quit your job and then try something new off the strength of your passion in your faith like it's probably it might work out and it might not but if it doesn't work out you can't go back to your job that you just quit and be like I get my job back but I didn't work out the way that I wanted to do they don't look at you like are you kidding me. so you have to be have to plan and be strategic about the way you go about doing it like for me like I said I know the hotels aren't something that I want to do forever like it's just not my passion and with the way that I live my life if it's not feeding my soul it's it's got to go and so I am slowly but surely making the plans necessary for me to move on and make that transition from hotels to something that feeds my spirit more like podcasting full-time my new business that I’m starting like I'm putting a lot of things in motion to make sure that I'm always being honest with myself and making sure that I can support myself. Now if it turns out that my business doesn't end up heading out the way that I wanted to you know it would suck but I believe in it so much that I feel like it'll work and it it'll work out in my benefits and if it ends up not then I'll scrap the idea start over again I'll rework it is that's just that's just how I operate anyway and I feel like it it's a really great way to live because we're never really good to know what works unless we try it right like how we talked about in the last episode episode 61 you know we can't know we don't know what we don't know right and there was the only way to find out is to do it so that's really where I'm coming at it with this

now for this week's challenge I want you to consider if it's time for you to switch things up and start something new you know it's up to you to decide where that might be in your life so you can you know start something new with your finances you can take on a new hobby or you can cultivate a new tradition with the relationships that you have in your life or really it it depends it's all up to you though like you're the you're the only one who knows what it's going on in your journey so that's up to you to figure out how that best make sense for you now if you're somebody who has just recently started something new look at you ahead of the game baby so here are some questions that you can ask yourself to kind of keep in mind right so couple questions could be how how is this new thing going for me do I see this being something that I continue doing you know later on down the line the more than you ask yourself these kinds of questions it allows you to maintain on the right track and make sure that you know you're practicing mindfulness.

That is everything that I have for you this week thank you so much for tuning in and I'll catch you next week. Bye.

And the final reason is that okay and reason number for it doesn't have to be a life sentence you can always go back to what you know this is a really really important reason as to why it's okay to start something new because I feel like a lot of times we're afraid to start something new because then it's like will once I take the step there's no going back that's not always 100% true I guess really it depends on what it is that you're doing I wouldn't recommend quitting your job and then starting something new just off of your passion in your face because a lot of times it might not work out and then you might not be able to go back to that job that you just quit because you just quit and they're like what we don't want to rehire you like you just quit and I know where you know so like you you have to have to put some some planning a little bit into this but depending on what it is that were talking about we're talkin I knew this could be something super beneficial or you know it really just depends but in my case I'll just use my physical activity again for example so one of the YouTube video workout things that I like to do is like I found I came across this like Cheetah Girls Dance Workout thing and it was fun I loved it because I was singing along and it motivated me more to dance like one of the songs with strut and that's two girls to the song strong like it always makes me want to get up and you know shake the thing so so it was a really great motivator but after like day 3 I was just like okay Board of it don't want to do this anymore and you know I just can't stick to Tua schedule like that it just doesn't work for me so instead what I do now going back to that hole intuitive living thing is one of the days I can do that I can just pull it out and if I do that video every once in a while it's still fun for me and it's not like I've done this a million times and I'm over it like no now I can just spice it up and I get to try new things but it's allowed me to not have to force myself to continue because once you make something a chore too much at least for me anyway it just it's not going back like I'm just not doing it it's not going to work out for me
